September was a great month for Daniel’s Care Van! Transporting the Brave took us all over the city, and even all the way up to Johnstown! We couldn’t be happier to see our miles increase every month, because with every mile we drive we know we are helping a child in need fight cancer or another life-threatening illness. In September alone, we drove 1,845 miles. To put that in perspective, that’s about as far as it is from Denver to Juneau Alaska! Since we started Transporting the Brave back in April, we’ve driven a total of nearly 5,000 miles.
Our September Riders
We had several brave kiddos as riders this month. In addition to our regular kids, we drove some new kids, too. We’re always happy to meet new families and witness the unique type of bravery each child brings to his or her fight against cancer. Here are just a few highlights from the past month:
- One of our little kiddos showed off his new walker and was super excited to show how it worked. It was so good to see this little one getting back up on his feet again and the smile that spread across his little cheeks as he took off was more motivation to keep Transporting the Brave.
- One of our new kiddos learned that when Jeri shows up it means he’s going to the hospital, so he wasn’t happy to see the Daniel’s Care Van car pull up. He cried the entire way to the hospital saying “I don’t like it.” Poor little guy, we don’t like it for you either. Thankfully, he was all smiles and giggles after his appointment.
- Another kiddo just felt awful the entire way to the hospital. We had to stop several times to help him clean up and replace the sick bags. Thankfully, we had the supplies we needed to take care of this sick little one.
Thank You Donors!
Early in the month we received an incredible donation of car seats from the Arvada Fire Department. This donation allows us to safely transport infants, toddlers, and older kiddos when families don’t have their own safety seats. Thank you to Lt. Mike Kulp and Deputy Fire Marshall Deanna Harrington of the Arvada Fire Department for making this happen.
In September we also received donations of snacks, water, and more sick bags from some very generous donors. We’ve also received cash donations, including a few who have committed to monthly donations, to help us pay for gas and other expenses related to Transporting the Brave. We’re also excited about some grant possibilities that have come up, as well as more networking contacts throughout the child healthcare and outreach communities. Thank you to all our generous donors for helping Daniel’s Care Van carry out its mission. We literally could not do this without you.
